Repairing plasterboard: A step by step guide

Materials Needed:

  1. Drywall patch or a piece of scrap drywall (larger than the hole)
  2. Drywall or joint compound
  3. Drywall tape (if the hole is larger than 1/2 inch)
  4. Sandpaper (120 or 150 grit)
  5. Primer
  6. Paint that matches the wall
  7. Paintbrush
  8. Utility knife
  9. Drywall saw (optional)
  10. Screwdriver
  11. Drywall screws
  12. A piece of wood (only for larger holes)

Steps:

  1. Preparation: Clear the area around the hole of any furniture or items that could get in the way. Clean the hole and the area around it of any loose debris or dust.

  2. Cutting a Patch: If the hole is smaller than 1/2 inch, skip to step 4. If it's larger, use your utility knife or drywall saw to cut a square or rectangle around the hole, then cut a piece of drywall to fit this hole. It should be slightly larger than the hole itself.

  3. Fixing Support: For larger holes, you'll need to insert a small piece of wood into the hole and fix it in place with drywall screws. This will provide support for the drywall patch.

  4. Applying the Patch: Place the drywall patch over the hole and secure it with drywall screws. Make sure it sits flush with the rest of the wall.

  5. Taping: If the hole was larger than 1/2 inch, apply drywall tape around the seams of the patch.

  6. Applying Joint Compound: Using a putty knife, apply the joint compound over the patch and tape. Feather the edges to blend with the wall. Let it dry fully.

  7. Sanding: After the joint compound has dried, use your sandpaper to smooth out the area and ensure it's flush with the rest of the wall.

  8. Priming and Painting: Apply a layer of primer over the area to prepare it for painting. Once the primer has dried, paint over the area with the matching wall paint.

  9. Cleanup: Once the paint has dried, clean up your workspace and replace any furniture or items you moved in the first step.

Remember, safety first! Make sure to wear appropriate safety equipment like goggles and gloves when necessary.
